Data chips are the items used for upgrading Ack to unlock new helper functions and recipes. They can be purchased at the Research Center Exchange or found while mining in the Abandoned Ruins.
The option to upgrade Ack becomes available after the player reaches Buddy level with him and completes Mission: Chip Upgrades. Ack can be upgraded while he is hired as a helper.
The player can use data chips by interacting with Ack and selecting the Upgrade option. The data chip has to be in the player's inventory in order to be used. Only one chip is needed to unlock the respective function or recipe, the rest can be sold. The second upgrade to the relic detector, will show the shape and name of the data chip.
