Game options allow the player to adjust certain in-game settings to fit their play style or needs. The options menu can be accessed from the Options button in the main menu upon loading the game, or at any time when not in a cutscene by using ESC on keyboard, OPTIONS on PS4, + on Switch, or ▶/☰ (START) on Xbox controllers. Time is paused while in game menus, including while in the Inventory menu.
Options[]
Game[]
If an option only has a checkbox, then the option is on if there is a green check mark and off if there is no check mark. If an option has a slider, moving the slider all the way to the left turns the option completely off or to its minimum setting, while turning the slider all the way to the right turns the option completely on to its maximum setting.
Inverse Camera (X, Y)
The camera is not [ verify ] inverted by default, so moving the mouse or right stick to the right will move the camera right, while moving them up will pan the camera upwards. If the X axis is inverted (X box has a check mark), then moving the mouse or right stick to the right will instead pan the camera to the left. If the Y axis is inverted (Y box has a check mark), then moving the mouse or right stick up will instead pan the camera downwards.
Camera Inertia
Camera inertia allows the camera to slow to a stop slightly after the player stops moving the camera. If turned off, the camera will stop panning as soon as the player stops moving it.
This option is turned on [ verify ] by default.
Camera Sensitivity
Increasing or lowering the camera sensitivity allows the player to either move their mouse or right stick less to pan the camera a further distance (if sensitivity is turned up) or give the player finer control over the camera (if sensitivity is turned down).
Auto Camera
If Auto Camera is turned on, then the camera will automatically turn to follow the player.
Auto Camera is turned off [ verify ] by default.
Game Speed
- Main article: Time
The speed of time's passage can be set anywhere between 100% (default rate) and 50% (half rate), which forces time to move at a selected rate and allows the player to play the game at their pace. This setting can be manually changed via the options menu at any point in the game that the menu is accessible. All time-related events move at the rate applied in the settings; the pace at which an NPC travels from one point to another is not affected, causing NPCs to arrive at their destination earlier on slower speeds. The time that an NPC departs to go somewhere stays the same regardless of what game speed is chosen, however. Additionally, certain festivals may act oddly if the game speed is set very low, such as the Day of the Bright Sun. It is recommended to play at 100% speed during festival events if they act oddly at custom speeds.
Controller Vibration
Controller vibration is only available if the player is playing with a controller that supports vibration. Vibration strength can be controlled by the slider.
Language
The language dropdown list allows the player to change in-game text for interfaces, dialogue and cutscene subtitles, item and mission information, and more. Hard-coded game assets, such as text on buildings or the Chinese subtitles on certain recordings, will not change.
Languages available on PC:
- English
- Simplified Chinese
- Traditional Chinese
- French
- German
- Italian
- Japanese
- Korean
- Portuguese
- Russian
- Spanish
- Turkish
- Vietnamese
Languages available on consoles:[1]
- English
- Simplified Chinese
- Traditional Chinese
- French
- German
- Italian
- Japanese
The player must load the game from the game menu in order for updated language settings to take effect.
Voiceover
Voiceovers include any spoken player lines (if the player chose a voice at the start of the game) and any spoken dialogue that NPCs have. Not all lines are currently voiced, this is not a bug.
Voiceovers are available in English and Chinese only. PC players may swap between voiceover language at will. Console players are locked to the following options: English if playing in English, Chinese if playing in Chinese, and English [ verify ] if playing in any other language.
If voiceovers are not desired, the Voice On option can be deselected to turn all character voices off.
Voiceovers are turned on by default.
Lightning On
Rain and lightning effects can be turned on or off via this option. Rain and lightning can cause severe lag on some machines, so turning this option off may drastically improve performance on rainy or stormy days.
This option is turned on by default.
Show Accessory
Some accessories will appear on the player's model when worn. If this option is deselected, then no accessories that the player is wearing will show, though any stats gained from the accessories are retained.
Accessories are turned on by default.
Show Hat
All hats (with certain headband-like exceptions) will always change the player's hairstyle to a certain default style while worn; hairstyles are restored immediately after either taking the hat off or turning Show Hat off. Deselecting this option restores the player's chosen hairstyle while retaining any stats gained from wearing the hat.
Hats are turned on by default.
Mini Map Rotate
The mini map shown in the lower right corner of the screen while the player is not in a menu or cutscene can be set so that it automatically rotates while the player moves the camera. [ verify ]
Rotation is turned off [ verify ] by default.
Sound[]
Sound Volume
This slider is the master volume control that affects the four sliders below it; turning it all the way to the right will make all four sliders play at the full volume that they are set to, while moving the slider all the way to the left will turn all sound off. The other four sliders allow further fine-tuning of sound volume.
Music
This slider controls the background music volume. It may also affect certain other sounds. [ verify ]
Sound Effect
This slider controls the volume of most of the sound effects, such as menu sounds, weapon or tool sounds, and footsteps.
Background
This slider controls the volume of ambient sounds, such as the sound of active crafting stations. [ verify ]
Voiceover
This slider controls the volume of any voiced lines.
Please note that not all lines are voiced; this is not a bug. More voices are still in the process of being added as of November 2020.
Graphics[]
The Graphics tab is only available on PC versions of the game.
Please be aware that the Simple preset graphics quality setting does not render ranged enemy attacks, such as the poisonous darts that Masked Fiends shoot, or certain visual effects, such as the visual "whoosh" trailing the player's weapons when attacking.[2] This can cause it to appear as if the player is being attacked out of nowhere.
Input[]
- Main article: Game controls
The Input tab displays the available in-game controls and their functions, and if playing on PC, allows the player to re-map controls to different keys/buttons.
