That university is a private organization... they can do whatever they want. Humanity subjects are less flashy than the "oh-so brilliant" technology and building departments... er, no offense. Big science projects bring in tons of money for the university, and I guess they got tired of spending it on the arts. The public won't notice a few historians or teachers disappearing...
