The Perfect Trap is a main mission.

This mission is part of the All Source AI theft plotline.

  1. The Theft
  2. A Boat to Starlight
  3. Adventure on Starlight Island
  4. The Perfect Trap

Overview[]

The player must have completed Adventure on Starlight Island.

This mission has two parts, each with different rewards.

Required stations[]

The player must have the following to complete this mission:

Conduct of the mission[]

After finding the passcode key in Starlight Island Ruin, Mali invites the player to the meeting with the mayor.

The following morning, the meeting takes place in the Town Hall.

Thanks for gathering here, everyone. We've got a big issue on our hands.
I think everyone but the Minister here already knows. We've got our hands on the passcode key needed for the All Source locator thing.
Oh, my word!
Yes, keep it down! Now that we have it, we know that the thief is still out there, and he's after it as well.
Shouldn't we just destroy it? I mean, it's too dangerous for us to handle. We don't really need to know where this AI is, do we? Let it be buried forever!
What? We still need to study it!
That thought has crossed my mind, but on matters like these, we'll need the Alliance government to make a decision. This All Source might be a boon to our survival.
Well? Have they said anything yet? You've already telegraphed our representative, right Gale?
Not yet, actually, because we're afraid the word might get out.
I'll personally go to Atara to deliver this news. Telegraphs can be intercepted.
Fine, but what about the actual Locator Computer? Have your researchers already taken a look?
No, the mayor failed to see the possibilities of exploring the contents of that machine.
The Civil Corps are holding on to the key for now... and Arlo has a plan.
Ahem, yeah, I was thinking that maybe we can set up a trap for this masked thief. No one knows what this All Source looks like or where it is. If we spread the word that we've found it that thief's bound to show up, on our terms.
It's a good plan. Once we capture this thief, a lot of our worries will evaporate.
Our Builder here can make an All Source model. We'll place it somewhere to lure the thief out.
Me? But I don't know what the All Source looks like.
Maybe you can ask your robot friend, Mr. Ack?
Sounds like a plan! Alright everyone, keep this quiet... Once we have the All Source model, we'll proceed with the capture mission. Watch me blab about it at a fireside meeting, that'll get his attention, haha!
I pray you all know what you're doing...

If the player misses the meeting, they instead receive a letter in the mail the next day:

Mission

From: Gale

Builder,

Where were you yesterday? That was very rude. We waited for you for such a long time. Anyway, this is on a need to know basis. We need you to help us build a model of the All Source computer that we are planning to use to capture the thief. Since no one knows what the All Source computer looks like, ask Mr. Ack... maybe he knows. Once you're done, give it to Arlo. Remember, this is top secret!
Gale

Ask Ack[]

The player needs to ask Ack for a diagram of the All Source model.

Holy cabana! All Source? My interfacing computer was called an All Source AI. Not that I've ever met her in person. Why do you need to know what an All Source computer looks like?
Uh...
Ooh! Top secret! I gotcha. I can give you a rough drawing, but if it doesn't look right, don't blame me. Alright?

Is this it? It's... not what I imagined. Whatever, it'll do. Thanks for the help!

Conduct of the secondary mission[]

After completing the first part, on the following day, Arlo initiates the plan.

Here's what's going to happen next. The Mayor will let slip at a fireside meeting that we've already found the All Source computer, and that we'll be destroying it. This will get the thief's attention for sure. But before that we'll need you to make the trap device itself, can you do that?
  • Sure!
  • I'm a little busy at the moment.
→  Sure!
Okay, great! The research ladies already made a Craft Recipe for us, here. Make it quick and don't let anyone see you building it!

This will work well! Let's go install it, we've cleared an area in the ruins on the Western Plateau. I'll go grab a few more people and wait for you there.

Head for the Ruins[]

The player needs to head to the Computer Lab Ruin on the Western Plateau. Inside, the player meets up with Mali and the Civil Corps.

Took you long enough, come on, let's install your trap and test it out.

Install the Trap[]

Mission The Perfect Trap - trapping Rogue Knight

Trapping the mysterious knight

The player needs to install the trap next to the All Source Model.

After installing the trap, Sam reports to Arlo notifying him that someone is coming. The group hides and a mysterious man appears, inspecting the All Source Model. The Trap Device traps the mysterious man and All Source Model lets out a gas substance.

Ha! Not so sneaky now, are you?
...
Who are you? You followed us here, didn't you?
Not too fast Mali. We designed this to hold a rhino, so this thief will be in here for a while. We'll have ample time to ask him questions.
For now, I want to see who's under that mask.
Are you done?
What?
Clever, setting up a trap like this.
That's right.
But you made one mistake.

The Rogue Knight uses a blaster weapon to destroy the All Source Model and slices through the Trap Device, breaking free. The group fights the Rogue Knight.

Defeat the Rogue Knight[]

The Rogue Knight is level 100. After sustaining enough damage on the Rogue Knight, at 50% health, the Rogue Knight knocks out the player and the Civil Corps before fleeing.

Back at the Town Hall, the group explain the incident at the ruin to Gale.

So that's what happened...
I'm leaving right away, I need to report this to the Alliance Council. If a knight is around here looking for the All Source, then I'm afraid it's no longer a case of local crime. I'll take the passcode key with me.
Yes, you must. I'm tempted to telegraph our representative as well.
Don't, at least not yet, wait for word from the council. I'll also try to bring some reinforcement.
You guys did well today, it's not easy facing a knight. Keep your heads up and keep up your guards, Portia needs you guys now more than ever. I'll be back as soon as I can!
Be careful!
Mali, wait, I'll send you off.
I can't believe Portia is facing a crisis like this!
What should we do boss?
With the passcode key gone, there's not much we or the thief can do. So, we wait. Put a guard at the Research Center at all times, just in case.

Post-conduct[]

Mali departs Portia to report to the Alliance Council.

The Civil Corps delivers a letter to the townsfolk, warning of the Rogue Knight.

Normal

From: Civil Corps

Dear Citizen,
The thief that stole from the Research Center before turned out to be a knight. We consider him armed and dangerous. If you see his whereabouts, please inform the Civil Corps right away!
The Civil Corps

Sometime after the mission, the Council Guards arrive in Portia. Their captain Ursula will give the player the next mission.

Django's invitation[]

After the Council Guards arrive, the player will receive a letter from Django:

Normal

From: Django

Hello Player,

If you have time, can you drop by? I have some questions about this knight you ran into.

Django will also have a mission marker above his head. When interacted with, he asks the player a question:

Hoho, nice to see you. I'm wondering, you've fought that knight...what was he like?
  • He was using ancient weapons.
  • Why are you interested?
→  He was using ancient weapons.
Oh was he now, most knights these days use some type of relic. It's like their calling card. The real knights though, they don't need these corrupted things.
→  Why are you interested?
I just happen to love the ideal of knighthood, you know, gallantry and honor. So I have a passing interest in them.
What exactly is a knight?
Didn't you have knights in Barnorock? Anyway, if you're lookin' for a history lesson, it's best you talk with Isaac. But knights are highly skilled warriors that defend the weak and balance the strong. Or that's how it's supposed to be. But nowadays...
We're getting off topic, I'm thinking of trying to find this knight and have a talk with him.
You want to reason with him?
That's right, I can't sleep well knowing a do-bad knight is in the neighborhood, it gives me a bad name.
Have you asked the Civil Corps to help you?
Ever since the Council Guards showed up, our Civil Corps members have become errand lads for that captain. I know Remington and that Ryder fella have been going around searching for the knight, but I don't think they're in the mood for talking it out.

The player will get +5 relationship points with Django when the dialogue ends.

After talking to Django, the player can approach Isaac to learn more about knights:

You want to know about knights? And you're not named Toby...interesting. Sure, I can share my knowledge on the subject.
What do you want to know?
Who are the knights?
They first appeared as sell swords during the first century of the Age of Darkness. People had no food, so some of the stronger, more capable fighters sold their service and protection to people who could feed them.
Eventually, this somehow intertwined with nostalgic notions of nobility and chivalry passed down from the Old World society, and these warriors took up a very ancient name for their craft. For the last two centuries of the Age of Darkness, the knights became a symbol of righteousness and good, protecting the weak and fighting injustice.
But ever since the time of Peach, there's been less and less knights around. We have standing armies, the Civil Corps, and adventurer guilds now. The knights of the old are a dying breed indeed.
How to become a knight?
The rules for knighthood are strict. A person can only become a knight when he or she has been through the accolade process in which three other knights acknowledge and pronounce that person fit for knighthood. That's why there are less and less knights around today, you can't easily find three other knights.
Was Django a knight?
That's what he claims, but I think it's just his passing fancy, haha. Django is a featherweight when it comes to combat, I've seen him run from a panbat. Don't be fooled by his sword training.

The player will get +5 relationship points with Isaac when the dialogue ends.
