For the Portia Bridge itself, see Portia River.

The Portia Bridge is a main mission.

This mission is part of the Eufaula Desert plotline.

  1. The Portia Bridge
  2. The Eufaula Tunnel
  3. Rescue in Ingall's Mine
  4. The Driller

Overview[]

The player must have completed Fixing Ack.

The mission is posted on the Commission Board. This commission has five different parts that are completed separately. Only one main-type commission can be taken at a time, but it can be taken simultaneously with a secondary-type commission.

Each mission has a time limit of 9 days; however, 5 days after accepting the first mission, Higgins will take one mission from the board each day thereafter. After an unknown number of days, Higgins will begin taking the missions regardless. The Bridge Tower and Steel Beam will have 7 days.

Required stations[]

Conduct of the mission[]

During the fireside meeting sometime after Ack has arrived, Gale announces the building of a road to Sandrock through the Eufaula Desert. He introduces an engineer from Vega 5, Mint, who will manage the project.

The following day, Gale, Mint, Higgins, Albert, and the player meet to discuss the project.

There you are, now that everyone's here, let's get on with business.
I'll start by emphasizing how important this is to us. Once we connect Portia to Sandrock with the new road, we become the de facto transportation hub between Vega 5, Sandrock, and Walnut Groove. That's an envious place to be in!
This here is Mint, I've known him since he was a pup. He's one of the best engineers around and will be heading this project. Mint, if you please.
Hey everyone. Let me give you an outline of our objectives for the Portia part of the project. Broadly speaking, there are two phases to this project. In phase one, we'll start the road from Sandrock as the terrain there is easier for construction. During that time, we'll need the Builders here to complete a bridge across the Portia River connecting to the desert.
Once the bridge is complete, we'll move on to phase two, which is the construction of a rest stop along the southern banks of the Portia River.
We're going to call this new town South Block! Not too original, I know, but it'll be a place where all the travelers can rest and enjoy the view of Portia.
We're working with Albert and his A&G Construction to build the bridge and South Block. I'll be leaving for Sandrock in a couple of days, Albert will be in charge of the local plans after that.
Right-o, I've pretty much worked with everyone in this room before, so I'd say this will go as smooth as a water troll's butt. As for the Builders, I'll post all the bridge commissions in the Commerce Guild starting tomorrow.
Why don't you just give me all the commissions. I can do it all.
I keep on tellin' you mate, there's more to life than just work... and that would be against guild rules anyways.
Ahahaha, I'm so looking forward to this! Good luck everyone!

The next day, Albert posts four commissions to build the bridge. There are two different types to this mission: gathering Steel Frames and gathering Hardened Clay; both are done separately with its own commission.

If the player fails to attend the meeting at Gale's office, a letter will arrive in the mail the following day:

From: Albert

Hey Player,

Why weren't you at the meeting yesterday? The Mayor has decided to get the ball rolling on a new road to Sandrock through the Eufaula Desert. Before this road can be completed, we'll need to build a bridge across the Portia River to the desert. I've posted several commissions regarding the bridge on the Commerce Commission board today, so you should go take a look. There's more to it, but I'll tell you about that later - you should have been there!

Prepare Building Materials (Bridge Tower and Steel Beam)[]

After completing the above missions, 4 commissions will appear on the board that will require you to build a Bridge Towers and Steel Beam in each commission. Please note that Higgins might claim and complete some of these commissions if the player does not complete and turn in all four of the Bridge Tower and Steel Beam commissions quickly enough.

The Bridge Tower (Diagram) and Steel Beam (Diagram) diagrams are added to the workbook upon accepting this mission.

This mission requires a vast amount of (100~200) Carbon Steel Bar and (32~64) Tempering Liquid to create the components. Only two of the four commissions are required.

This mission must be completed within 7 days, unlike the other commissions.

This mission can be completed a total of 4 times as there will be four commissions available on the board.

Post-conduct[]

The Portia Bridge will be completed several days after the player and / or Higgins complete all bridge commissions. The player will receive a following letter in the mail:

Letter

From: Gale

Dear Citizen,

I am happy to inform you that we've completed the Portia Bridge leading into the Eufaula Desert. This is a key piece to our plan to build a road to Sandrock. We will be holding a ribbon cutting ceremony tomorrow, please drop by!

The player will also receive a letter from Albert informing them about The Eufaula Tunnel commissions. The commissions will be posted on the Commissions Board starting the following day.

After the bridge is completed the player will gain access to the Eufaula Desert and its unique resources like Asterias, Dragon Hearts, Poplar Wood, and Palm Jujube and monsters like Desert Hoppers and Spladers which are not found anywhere else. The Desert Abandoned Ruins will be opened for diving, allowing the player to mine Aluminum Ore. The player will also get access to two fishing spots: the Eufaula Desert Oasis spot and the Eufaula Heights.

Two Dee-Dee stop locations become available immediately after the bridge is completed: the stop just south of the bridge on the other side of the Portia River and the stop in the southern Eufaula Desert above the Ingall's Mine quarry.

NPC comments about the Portia Bridge[]

Some characters have unique lines after the bridge opens:

This Mint fella, supposedly he's a relative of Gale's. But Gust doesn't talk about him at all. Do you know anything about Mint? Other than that he sleeps a lot.
I saw a new face in town the other day. I think his name was Mint. He was so polite!
I think we'll be getting a lot more commissions now that the bridge is complete. We used to have to transport everything west to the Main Road, but now we can move goods directly east through the desert.
We'll probably need to train new Corps members soon if we're to continue to provide maxium secuirty for our town. With the new bridge completed, we're now patrolling all the way to the desert. That's a large area to cover!
I'm so glad we have finished the Portia Bridge! Now my brother Siwa can join us for our weekend BBQ!
I heard the Mayor will be building a new settlement over on the southern bank of the Portia River. I'm sure I'll get more patrons soon!
My sister Molly doesn't want to visit the desert, but I'm different. We've seen the desert from this side of the Portia River for so long, I just want to go over there and kick some sand! Or make sand angels!
I think the establishment of South Block will be an important event in Portia's history. Eventually, I think our town will be as big as Atara.
I can't wait to see South Block completed! I'm going to put our city on the map! Figuratively.
I heard there's an abandoned mine over at the edge of the Eufaula Desert. It was one of the first mines established during the Great Migration south from Ethea. There are rumors that there are monsters in there...
According to history books, the Eufaula Desert existed even before the Age of Darkness. That's somewhat rare, since the geography of the world changed so much during the Day of Calamity.
Toby wants me to go on an adventure with him into the desert! But I don't want to go! It's scary!
We'll probably do some preaching over in South Block once it's up and running. We have many followers among the travelers.
We don't get to see Siwa often because of the river. But now we can visit as often as we want!
I'm planning on taking my students to visit Siwa's farm at the edge of the desert. I hope they're excited! We don't go on field trips too often.
I was planning on taking my girls out to the desert for a nice family day trip. But then I heard their teacher is planning the same thing. Darn.
I'm glad we have that bridge connecting to the desert now. We have some townsfolk we rarely see living on the other side of the river. Now they'll have an easier time coming to town.
I took on this project as a favor for Uncle Gale. He's been very supportive of me.
Ms. Lucy said we'll be going on a field trip to the desert soon. But I don't want to go to the desert! It's so hot there!
I went over to the Eufaula Desert the other day, it was so hot! When I came here from Atara, the road went around the desert.
The new bridge is so big! I haven't crossed over to the other side yet. Papa Bear says he'll die in the desert heat.
I just got a letter from a colleague of mine in Vega 5. They think once the new road to Sandrock is complete, they can finally go "modernize that backwater town." I've never been to Sandrock, is it that backward?
If they're truly going to build a new town called South Block, they'll be needing a doctor there, right? Maybe that'll be my chance to shine.
Ms. Lucy will be taking us to visit Siwa's farm over in the Eufaula. I'm really looking forward to it! My family's poor, so we don't get to travel much.
I'm looking forward to the completion of South Block. I think it'll be a big boon to our economy!
Now that the Portia Bridge has been completed, our patrol area has expanded quite a bit. We're now patrolling all the way to the edge of the desert.
Gale has been planning the Portia Bridge for a long time. I do believe it'll be the key to the future prosperity of our city.
Our Grandma is planning to open a hotel once South Block is up and running. She's a go-get-'er.
Mint is kind of cute, don't you think? But he sure naps a lot. The other day he came in for an order. Before I fulfilled it, he was already sound a sleep! I have never seen anyone do that before.
With that bridge done, I can make my away to the desert for my adventures! I've got to plan this out with Jack! Maybe we'll visit an oasis or fight against the Desert Hoppers!
Supposedly, there are a few good fishing spots off the coast in the Eufaula Desert. I've never tried it though.
I just came back from a delivery trip to Vega 5. The people there are awfully excited about the prospect of connecting with Sandrock through Portia.
I took a trip over to the desert the other day. There are several species of useful herbs over there. I wonder if I can make some new herbal mixes.
